| 520 | 3 | |a The structures of polysaccharides from two members of the family Rhodomelaceae have been determined. The polysaccharide from Polysiphonia atterima was very similar to those determined previously from Polysiphonia species, and consisted of substituted agar and precursors, but with the 3-linked units substituted at the 6-position with sulfate ester (60 %), methyl ether (5 %) and low levels of xylose, and 5 % of the 4-linked units being non-sulfated L-galactose. The polysaccharide from Pterosiphonia pennata was a substituted agar with low levels of precursors.Following alkali treatment, the chain comprised only agarobiosyl units, in which 26 % of the 3-linked units were substituted at the 6-position with sulfate ester, and 56 % of the anhydrogalactosyl units were 2-O-methylated. | |
