520 3 |a Searching for a non-aqueous deacidification procedure for acidic books and other paper documents tests were performed using aminoalkoxysilanes, which can be bound to the paper network by self-cross-linking. Six different books from the beginning of the xxth century were used for tests with ethanolic solutions of five relevant compounds in increasing concentrations. Test parameters were pH and alkaline reserve. As a general result it is concluded that aminosilanes seem to provide a promising alternative to the actual mass deacidification methods using metal organic compounds some of which leave behind magnesium cations in the paper, which can provide problems on long term ageing. Within the text some deliberations are given regarding the accuracy of usual pH measurements and their interpretation regarding prognoses on paper permanence, and generally on the detailed chemistry of paper deacidification.
