| 520 | 3 | |a This article focuses on a multistage analysis of the widely discussed question of whether there are regular patterns in word formation of blendings or not. After summing up the latest research in compendia and monographs follows an analysis of a corpus. Based on this analysis there will be a discussion whether these word formations are regular or not regular. In this context the interest is directed towards the predictability and dissolvability of blendings. It should be made clear that in this case there is no contradiction between a ‘play on words' and a ‘regular pattern of word formation': Blendings are at least in there cardinal appearances plays on words as well as regular patterns of word formation. Plays on words require certain rules for encoding and decoding word formations to let communication work. From that point of view the regularities revealed in this article are a phenomenon of blendings in context with the creative and playful use of language, which is through their regular pattern solvable by listeners and readers and therefore generally attractive. | |
