The new Renaissance notion of fiction is based on an understanding of reality which is not compatible with Aristotle's view. For Aristotle, the purpose of mimesis is not the presentation of events which might conform to actual reality and its contingencies. Its purpose is to present a possible action, which is possible because it conforms to the general nature of a character. Thus, it might be said that a productive transformation of the relation between possibility and reality in Aristotle is at the heart of the Renaissance concept of the poetry of imitation. | |
