   <subfield code="a">The stress analysis of a stepped shaft under remote torsion is carried out. The shaft consists of two semi-infinite solid cylinders bonded at their interface. Unlike existing methods, the present technique directly utilizes the analytic eigenfunctions of the problem and thus it is perhaps the simplest efficient analytic approach. For the analysis, an effective procedure of matching the interface conditions between the two cylinders of different radii is proposed, without which the direct use of the analytic solutions would not be of great advantage. The asymptotic technique, proposed earlier by one of the authors, is also employed to enhance the convergence and extract the corner singularity at the interface</subfield>
