   <subfield code="a">The effect of the air on the calculation of the ambient dose equivalent and of the dose equivalent at 10 mm depth on the principal axis of a ICRU sphere has been investigated by the Monte Carlo code FLUKA, in the case of parallel beams of monoenergetic photons from 0.5 MeV to 10 GeV. The influence of the air on the values of the dose equivalent depends strongly on the geometry of the irradiation. This could be a serious limitation to the introduction of the air surrounding a phantom in the calculation of the conversion coefficients from physical to operational quantities. The ambient dose equivalent is confirmed to be inappropriate as an operational quantity at photon energies higher than about 3 MeV.</subfield>
