   <subfield code="a">Film processing is an important link in the radiographic chain and a consistently high level of processor performance is essential for optimisation of the imaging process. Low film throughput in automatic film processors has been reported to affect processing performance. A breakdown of film usage at this centre indicates variations in excess of 50% above and below the average throughput for some processors. The influence of distribution on the performance of eight automatic processing units (APU) is therefore investigated. The results suggest that processor location has a considerable influence on relative workload and a large disparity in throughput among APUs at this centre is confirmed. The results do not indicate that frequency of mechanical breakdown is related to throughput, but mechanical performance is identified as an important factor influencing overall performance. While the results do not confirm a relationship between sensitometric performance and film throughput, they are not inconsistent with a previously reported figure for minimum throughput of 50 films per day.</subfield>
