   <subfield code="a">Modern radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment relies on automatic exposure control (AEC) to select and/or terminate patient exposures. To enable these devices to perform optimally it is necessary that: (i) they are designed with exposure optimisation in mind, (ii) the user understands the necessary requirements for them to function optimally, and (iii) they function in accordance with their design over the range of conditions encountered in practice. Two different AEC systems are assessed by carrying out functional checks over a range of clinical conditions and by conducting a survey of AEC users. The results indicate that significant variations in patient exposures can occur when using AEC. The survey suggests that additional user training may be of benefit in the optimisation of AEC technique.</subfield>
