   <subfield code="a">The results of quality assurance procedures performed by 3500 sets of radiological equipment were reviewed by the 'Arztliche Stelle' (quality evaluation panel) of Lower Saxony from 1988 to 1993. Of 95,000 examinations reviewed, 7000 patient studies were selected and analysed in terms of technical and diagnostic quality and patient dose. For this report the emphasis was put on parameters of special relevance for radiation exposure and image quality such as film-screen system (FSS), tube voltage and film processing. The average FSS speed 9S) has gone up. The percentage of FSSs with a speed of 400 or higher has increased from 8% in 1984 to 30% in 1993. A reduction in detector dose from an average 9.2 µGy to 5.4 µGy has thus been achieved. In 1989 55% of the examinations were performed with tube voltages in accordance with the guidelines issued by the German Medical Association and the European Commission, while this was 72% in 1993. High speed FSS and high tube voltage yield a good image quality at low patient dose. Especially in the abdomen, a reduction in dose to 25% or less of the 1984 values can be achieved without loss of information.</subfield>
