   <subfield code="a">The effect of low level irradiation may be delayed for many generations in HeLa cells. When the progeny of irradiated cells was seeded 15-30 generations after irradiation (0.1-0.5 Gy 60Co ? rays, 0.3 Gy.min-1; or in the Chernobyl zone 0.1-0.5 Gy, 0.003-0.005 Gy.h-1) they formed clones with a reduced number of cells. There are giant cells and cells with micronuclei in such clones. Progeny of surviving HeLa cells showed a reduced cloning efficiency and enhanced radiosensitivity. These results suggest that residual damage may by carried by surviving progeny over many generations and expressed as changes which lead to delayed reproductive death.</subfield>
