   <subfield code="a">Secondary ion mass spectrometry allows a rapid detection of stable or radioactive nuclides and an accurate measurement of isotopic ratios. Several instruments make it possible to obtain images representing the distribution of a given nuclide in a tissue section. With the most modern instruments using scanning ion probes, the spatial resolution has been substantially improved and the isotopic images are now obtained with a resolution of 0.02 µm. As applied to radiation protection and dosimetry research this method can be used either as a pure mass spectrometer, or as an ion microscope. By mass spectrometry of thin foils, the detection of radionuclides and the measurement of isotopic ratios can be obtained more rapidly and with a better sensitivity than with alpha or beta spectrometry, particularly in the case of long lived emitters. Using the imaging mode for the study of tissue sections, the intracellular distribution of radionuclides allows useful data to be obtained for microdosimetric studies.</subfield>
