   <subfield code="a">The male and female genitalia of five Coproica Rondani species are described. The external male genitalia consist of two pairs of claspers, the telomeres and the postgonites, the phallophore, and the intromittent organ, the distiphallus, which carries the phallotrema. The external female genital opening lies between sternites 8 and 9 and opens directly into the vagina. A spoon-shaped vaginal sclerite is embedded in the dorsal vaginal wall and carries the openings of the spermathecal and accessory gland ducts. The flies copulate in a superimposed position. The engagement of male and female genitalia during copulation is described. Histological serial sections of pairs frozen in copula revealed that during copulation the distiphallus is brought forward into the copulatory position and held parallel to the postgonites. The telomeres are used to spread the female genital opening, the postgonites are inserted into the vagina and spread the soft vaginal tissue. The distiphallus is hooked to the vaginal sclerite and the phallotrema is applied to the tip of the vaginal sclerite. The vaginal sclerite matches the inside of distiphallus. After genital contact is established, Coproica acutangula (Zetterstedt) and C. lugubris (Haliday) males retrieve their distiphallus into a ventral pouch and remove the vaginal sclerite from its original position inside the vagina. Throughout copulation the males of all species contract their terminalia rhythmically. C. acutangula, C. hirticula (Collin), and C. lugubris males use their legs to drum the female's abdomen during copulation. These movements can be interpreted as copulatory courtship. The behavioral and morphological observations are used to evaluate the lock and key hypothesis and the female choice hypothesis for the evolution of complex male genitalia. Preliminary data on sperm transfer is presented: in C. acutangula, C. hirticula, and C. lugubris sperm is transferred by a closed system. In C. ferruginata (Stenhammar) and C. vagans (Haliday) the distiphallus is unhooked from the vaginal sclerite before ejaculation and a sperm mass is transferrred into the vagina.</subfield>
