   <subfield code="a">Multitubular bodies (MTBs) in the myelinated axons of Purkinje cells in the cerebellar cortices of groggy mutant rats were examined by acid phosphatase (ACPase) cytochemistry and cathepsin D (CD) immunocytochemistry. ACPase reaction products were localized both in the tubules of MTBs and cisternae of the axonal agranular reticulum (AAR). The vesicular structures in the vicinity of the MTBs also contained ACPase reaction products in various degrees. On the other hand, CD immunoreactivity was found in a part of the vesicular structures, while the MTBs and AAR remained unstained. Since interconnections between the MTBs and AAR were frequently observed, MTBs are believed to be hypertrophically altered AAR. The present results also suggest that MTBs play a function in ACPase transport in the Purkinje axon under certain conditions.</subfield>
