   <subfield code="a">The effect of trichome density on Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis Mulsant, development was studied using larvae reared on 3 soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, isolines isogenic except for trichome density: glabrous, normal, and dense. Larvae completed the 1st instar most quickly on pubescent plants, whereas 3rd-instar duration was shortest on glabrous plants; however, total larval development did not differ significantly. Larvae reared on the glabrous isoline had 14-29% greater mean dry pupal weights than larvae reared on the dense and normal isolines. Finally, larval mortality was 2.5—5 times greater on the densely pubescent isoline compared with the glabrous and the normal isolines. Feeding preference, as determined by choice tests, also significantly varied among developmental stages. Firstinstar larvae caused 6-8 times more feeding damage on the pubescent isolines than on the glabrous isoline; whereas, 3rd and 4th instars caused 3-13 times more damage on the glabrous isoline than on the normal and dense isolines. Adults did not show a significant feeding preference. In addition, female beetles did not exhibit a significant oviposition preference. Overall, these results suggest that soybean trichomes may provide limited resistance against the Mexican bean beetle, particularly against older larvae. The lower pupal mass and increased mortality on isolines with trichomes also suggest that trichomes may influence the population dynamics of the Mexican bean beetle.</subfield>
