   <subfield code="a">Multivoltine, parthenogenetic grape phylloxera, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae Fitch, gall the leaves of wild grape, Vitis arizonica Englemann, along riparian areas in Arizona. We compared patterns of distribution of 1st-generation galls within leaves to determine if intraspecific competition for sites influenced the probability of survival and reproductive success. Within-leaf distribution patterns of galls were random or aggregated. There were significantly more galls on primary and secondary veins than on tertiary veins, but there were no differences in numbers of galls colonizing proximal, medial, or distal regions of a leaf. Survivorship of females was not significantly different among vein type or region colonized. There was a significantly greater mean fecundity within galls when females colonized secondary veins compared with primary or tertiary veins, but this difference explained only 3% of the variance. Leaf size was not correlated with percentage of survivorship or mean fecundity within galls. Increased gall density from 4 to 10 galls per leaf did not result in decreased survivorship and the effect on mean fecundity was marginal. There were significant differences in percentage of phylloxera survivorship and mean fecundity among leaves collected from different host clones. Interference competition appeared to be absent at the within-leaf spatial scale, but at greater spatial scales, host quality was important to phylloxera fitness.</subfield>
