   <subfield code="a">The chromocenter/regeneration hypothesis states that the processes of regeneration, rapid growth and development vis-a-vis species colonization of an environment and invasiveness are under the control of nuclear chromocenters. Previous work in our lab had shown that there is a positive correlation between the potential for rapid growth and colonization, as well as the potential for regeneration linked to cellular content of nuclear chromocenters. The Eastern Red Cedar tree, Juniperus virgiana, is a highly proliferating often referred to as an invasive species. The occurrence of large invasive populations of this species in many regions of the United States and Canada in pure or mixed stands prompted us to test the validity of the correlation with the chromocenter / regeneration hypothesis. Presence of chromocenters was examined in the root-tip cells stained with Giemsa and aceto-orcein. As expected, the cells were found to contain numerous chromocenters, thus providing added support to the hypothesis.</subfield>
