   <subfield code="a">The hardenability parameter is used for characterizing structure formation in a steel under different cooling conditions including normalizing and annealing. A concept of equivalent cooling rate is introduced to represent the rate of cooling for a specific structure. The effect of the hardenability parameter on the equivalent cooling rates corresponding to different structures (martensite, half-martensite, and ferrite-pearlite-bainite with various combinations of the components) is analyzed.</subfield>
