   <subfield code="a">The pathogenicity of fungi isolated from mesocotyls, roots and stalks of maize during surveys on the Atherton Tableland was determined by inoculation of sweet corn cv. Miracle. Twelve common fungi were evaluated for mesocotyl and root rots, and effects on dry weight at silking. Pyrenochaeta indica, Fusarium moniliforrne, Pythium myriotylum, F, graminearum, Colletotrichum graminicola and one isolate of F. oxysporum caused mesocotyl rot. Significant root rot resulted from inoculation with P. indica, P. myriotylum and F. moniliforme. The dry weight of plants was significantly reduced by P. indica, P. myriotylum, F. rnoniliforme and F. graminearum. This is the first record of pathogenicity of P. indica to sweet corn. Ten common fungi were tested for stalk rot by toothpick inoculation at silking. C. graminicola, P. myriotylum, F. graminearum and Exserohilum longirostratum caused significant stalk rot.</subfield>
