   <subfield code="a">Under completely brittle conditions a crack can only be stabilized by lattice trapping. The crack rate à in vacuo is then controlled by the rupture of individual bonds at the crack tip with the aid of thermal activation. A careful thermodynamic analysis shows that the thermodynamic activation area is somewhat larger but comparable in magnitude to the atomistic activation area (i.e., the area by which the crack advances in each activation event). By plotting the experimental results in à vs K 2 (K = stress intensity factor) it is possible to derive the activation area from the slope of the curve and hence to determine whether brittle conditions can prevail.</subfield>
