   <subfield code="a">Summary: A two-parameter deformation criterion has been devised for describing the resistance to fatigue crack growth in plastic materials. Measurements are used to show the advantages of that criterion over others from failure mechanics. That criterion enables one to construct a single kinetic diagram for fatigue failure for a plastic material over a wide range of degrees of plastic strain near the crack vertex, i.e., including the ranges of long and short cracks. That kinetic diagram for fatigue failure can be used as a characteristic of the material. It has been shown that the method can be used to predict the length of the fatigue-crack initiation stage by the use of traditional fatigue-failure kinetic diagrams.</subfield>
