   <subfield code="a">Summary: Measurements have been made on the interactions of VT1-0, OT4-1, and VT6S titanium alloys with nitrogen at 10-0.1 Pa. Reduced nitrogen partial pressures improve the quality of the nitrided layer considerably. The surface microhardness is reduced somewhat as the partial pressure falls, but after 25 h, it is at the level of 11-13 GPa at all pressures, which is quite satisfactory. This is not the hardness of the brittle and very thin nitride film but that of the strengthened subsurface layers, which do not require additional treatment. The depth of the gas-saturated zone decreases as the pressure is reduced. To produce deep hardened layers (about 100 μm) with good surface finish at 1223 K in 25 h, it is undesirable to reduce the gas pressure below 10 Pa.</subfield>
