   <subfield code="a">Conclusions: The test results showed that the specimens obtained from the spinel powders having the stoichiometric composition exhibit superior sinterability as compared to the spinel-based specimens having an excess content of aluminum oxide. Using the additives activating the sintering process made it possible to decrease the open porosity of the spinel specimens from 15 up to 0.15-1.5%. It appears that the low apparent density of the specimens owes to the significant quantity of closed porosity. It was established that the dense specimens resist the action of optical glasses satisfactorily.</subfield>
