   <subfield code="a">Conclusions: Class I and class II genes diverged before the appearance of the amphibians; in fact the class II isotypes apparently also split before this time. It has been relatively easy to find xenoantisera which cross-react with recognizable MHC molecules in reptiles and amphibians, but not in fish. It is not clear whether this is due to high-sequence divergence, low abundance, unrecognizable biochemical properties or simple absence. At least one other highly polymorphic MHC-encoded cell surface multigene family exists in nonmammalian vertebrates: the disulfide-linked dimeric chicken B-G molecule. Molecules with superficial biochemical similarities are found in association with class I α chain in reptiles and amphibians. The roles of these molecules are yet to be discovered.</subfield>
