   <subfield code="a">Summary: This paper describes the phase transfer catalyzed depolymerization of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene (xide) performed in the presence of either 2,4,6-trimethylphenol or 4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethylphenol. The structure of the resulting polymers is compared to that of the corresponding polymers obtained by the phase transfer catalyzed polymerization of 4-bromo-2,6-dimethylphenol in the presence of either 2,4,6-trimethylphenol or 4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethylphenol. Polymers obtained by depolymerization display a bimodal molecular weight distribution while those obtained by polymerization a monomodal molecular weight distribution. The polymers obtained by direct polymerization present structural units derived from some side reactions. These side reactions do not occur during the depolymerization process.</subfield>
