   <subfield code="a">The concentrations of vitamin D metabolites were measured in 50 human breast milk samples obtained from 40 mothers who delivered preterm infants (preterm milk) and in 46 milk samples obtained from 46 mothers who delivered full-term infants (term milk). In the first five weeks of lactation, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) in preterm milk was higher (p&lt;0.05) than in term milk, and it appeared to be significantly increased during the period of 32-33 weeks postconception and then declined significantly as the number of postconceptional weeks increased. 1,25(OH)2D in preterm milk also appeared to be increased in the 32-33 week period of postconception and declined after that period. Next, we examined whether the concentration of 1,25(OH)2D in preterm milk was related to the lactational period. In the preterm milk sampled from the first day to the fifth month of lactation, the 1,25(OH)2D level were related to the postconceptopnal week rather than the lactational week.</subfield>
