   <subfield code="a">Abstract : This paper gives an overview about the distribution, further development and experience with PEPE, the psychoeducative programme for people with epilepsy and learning disabilities, which has been in use for five years now. PEPE is tailored to the special needs and abilities of epilepsy patients with additional learning disabilities or learning difficulties. Important aims of the program are to improve compliance, to help accept epilepsy as a chronic illness, and to adapt life style to the disorder. The computer-assisted multimedia programme includes text projection, cartoons, photos, animations and real and animated film clips. The eight two-hour sessions cover topics like common causes of epilepsy, seizure types, treatment of epilepsy, additional learning and physical disabilities, but also stigmatisation due to epilepsy, seizure triggers, work and employment, leisure activities, relationships and sexuality, all with respect to epilepsy. The didactic approach is adapted to the reduced cognitive and mnestic abilities of the participants. It includes a substantial reduction in the amount of information, simplification, visualisation, repetition techniques, dialogue teaching, and making use of the patients' own experiences. During the last five years, approx. 50 facilitators have been trained. The majority of courses have been carried out in hospitals or other institutions specialising in epilepsy, while only a limited number of learning disability facilities (residences or workshops) have been involved until now. Written feedback (a short questionnaire filled in by participants) has been given after 23 courses with 165 participants. When asked if they &quot;knew better about epilepsy” after the course, 55% of the participants responded &quot;much better” and a further 42% responded &quot;better”. Questions on &quot;coping with epilepsy” and &quot;feeling independent” were answered in a similarly positive way. Overall contentment was even higher: 82% were &quot;very satisfied with the course altogether”. The reasons for this high degree of assent are discussed. Personal feedback by course facilitators given at a facilitators' meeting in the spring of 2005 was also very encouraging. Only recently has an English version been developed in close cooperation with the English National Society for Epilepsy NSE. Experience with the transnational adaptation of the programme is reported in more detail. Altogether, the PEPE programme is a well-accepted component of comprehensive care for epilepsy in people with additional learning disabilities or learning disorders; however its distribution in learning disability facilities is still limited.</subfield>
