   <subfield code="a">Data are presented on the orientation and dose dependences and kinetics of the transverse photoemf (TPE) in rectangular samples cut from lead iodide crystals so that the angle between the normal to the face to be irradiated and the sixfold axis c is 0°, 45°, or 90°. The samples were excited by x-rays or the radiation from He-Cd and He-Ne lasers. Under x-ray excitation and above-band-gap laser excitation (λ = 440 nm), the main contribution to the photo-emf comes from the Dember effect. Under volume excitation of the 45° samples with the 632-nm He-Ne laser line, the TPE is due to photovoltaic and anomalous transverse Dember effects. Below-band-gap laser irradiation reduces the TPE produced in PbI2 by above-band-gap laser excitation because the photo-emf-s arising from the short-and long-wavelength excitations are opposite in sign.</subfield>
