   <subfield code="a">This paper is concerned with a new deformation theory of composite systems with randomly oriented short fibres. The material system is regarded as a two-dimensional elastic matrix that contains a random arrangement of short, viscoelastic fibres. Due to the inherent randomness of the physical and geometrical characteristics of the microstructure, probabilistic concepts are used. In this regard, the significant field quantities involved in the deformation process are treated in the analysis as stochastic variables and the deformation process itself is seen as a stochastic process. The analysis is presented in a general form and, hence, is applicable to a large class of fibre-composite systems.</subfield>
