The degree of martensitic transformations attending the deformation of metastable austenitic steels is determined by their chemical composition and the test conditions. 2. In the process of deformation, at temperatures ttest d without heating of the specimens, the content of martensite is bound to increase with increased degree of deformation. If isothermal test conditions are not ensured and the specimens are heated when deformed, then the content of martensite must be smaller than under isothermal conditions of deformation. 3. An increase of the strain rate leads, on the one hand, to a rise of the temperature of the specimens, and on the other hand to a lowering of the &quot;effective” test temperature. The interaction of these two phenomena determines the content of martensite, and consequently the change of properties of metastable austenitic steels under high-speed deformation.</subfield>
