   <subfield code="a">Summary: Over the past ten years, a steady increase has been observed in the mention of bioaerosols causing health and physiological effects related to indoor air pollution: description of &lt;&lt;new&gt;&gt; diseases (legionellosis) and growing numbers of allergic illness. During the same time, the domain concerned with the microbiology of the atmosphere got significantly wider. The need for careful control of environmental air is evident in areas as diverse as hospitals (operating theaters, burns units...), food processing plants, cosmetic and pharmaceutical plants. Control of airborne contamination is also important to ensure that contamined air is not introduced into the air supply and that microorganisms either present in ambient air or generated during manufacture are not added to products. These factors justify microbiological indoor air sampling for hospital wards, surgeries, fully air conditioned buildings, collective environments, specific industrial areas,... This explains the diversity of sampling methods. Unfortunately, very little has been published about sampling procedures identification and quantification of indoor bioaerosols. Before enumerating the principal sampling methods, we must make some important remarks which may have consequences on future results.</subfield>
