   <subfield code="a">A hybrid analytical-numerical technique, based on mode summation and finite differences, is used to simulate the January 13, 1915, Fucino (Italy) earthquake. This was a strong seismic event, which caused extended structural damage in the city of Rome. The damage distribution in the city is well documented. The results of the simulation are used for a comparison between the observed damage distribution and some characteristics of computed ground acceleration such as the peak ground acceleration (PGA) and the total energy (W) of ground motion. Integral quantities of the computed time-series, such asW, have the best correlation with the observed damage distribution. This study, therefore, confirms the validity of usingW as a reliable parameter of strong ground motion in seismic hazard studies. The results of this paper give the possibility for a fast seismic zonation, with no need to wait for a strong earthquake to occur, and permit to predict the variation of seismic hazard due to possible temporal changes in geotechnical parameters,e.g. due to digging or changes in the ground water level. The cost of the acquisition of geotechnical data for a certain area is much higher than that required tor the application of the zonation technique proposed in this paper. Since geotechnical data are available for several areas, especially in urban environments, the proposed technique can provide a valid seismic zonation with a small cost relative to the funds routinely invested in geotechnical analysis.</subfield>
