   <subfield code="a">Conclusions: -- A brief analysis has been made of domestic and foreign scientific-technical literature about the development of reliable absorption surgical suture materials (SSM). Significant attainments in solving this question are the appearance abroad of new synthetic absorbable SSM: Dexon, Vycryl, and PDS. Attention is drawn to the wide use of copolymers of various classes for these purposes (polyester, polyurethane, polyester amides). Depending on their chemical composition and processing conditions, surgical fibres can be prepared with controllable absorption times. -- The materials based on cellulose derivatives, Oktselon and Katselon, which have been developed in the USSR and approved for application, present interest. Organizing their serial manufacture has considerable importance for ensuring to our country high-quality absorbable SSM, which are so necessary for replacing catgut. -- An important problem which has been placed before Soviet investigators is also completion of work on developing SSM based on polyglycolide and a copolymer of glycolide with lactide. Absorbable fibres having diameters down to 10 µm can be prepared from these polymers. Such fibres are extremely necessary for ophthalmic, neuro-, cardio-, micro-, and blood vessel surgery, and for other regions of restorative surgery. It is natural that the synthesis of monomers and polymers of special purity is a decisive factor thereupon. -- Solution of the problems posed will make it possible to sharply reduce the percentage of postoperative complications and correspondingly to reduce the number of repeated operations. Simultaneously, the time for treating surgical patients will be shortened and expenses for treatment will be reduced.</subfield>
