   <subfield code="a">Summary: We consider the motion of a string with fixed ends, under the influence of a plane monochromatic gravitational wave. The gravitational interaction is treated perturbatively and by choosing an appropriate orthonormal gauge the equations of motion are simplified to a large extent. A resonant phenomenon is observed when the conditionk(E±T 0 d)=2πT 0 n is satisfied, wherek(E) is the energy of the gravitational wave (string) andd is the length of the string projected along the direction of the incident wave. We suggest that the string may be used as a detector for gravitational waves.</subfield>
