   <subfield code="a">The paper focuses on identifying equilibrial shape and size of a process zone forming ahead of a growing crack in polymers. The concept of phase transformation and the corresponding equations are applied in modelling such a zone. In addition to transformation stress σtr, a new parameter characterizing the transformation phenomena, the specific energy of transformation γtr [J/m3] is introduced. The assumption of the narrow process zone results in a simple solution of the problem. The comparative analysis of the phase transition approach with that of the Dugdale-Barenblatt model (DBM) is presented. When the specific energy γtr is much smaller than σtr the proposed model recovers the well known results of DBM. If γtr is of the same or larger order of magnitude than σtr, the new model predictions depart significantly from that of DBM. The experimental observations reported in [5] and [11] provide a solid support to the proposed model.</subfield>
