   <subfield code="a">Continuing the time-coordinate of certain elastodynamic mode-III crack solutions to imaginary values, one obtains the potential of a stationary hydrodynamic flow around an infinitely thin plate. The inverse of this procedure is applied to a well-known axisymmetric flow potential, and a new exact solution for the propagation of a crack with finite length is derived. This solution does not directly correspond to a realistic experimental situation, as it is symmetric under time reversal (t → −t). However, for large positive times it may be viewed as an asymptotic description of the displacement field when the crack tips approach their final velocity. Its energy-release-rate is shown to be time-independent, hence providing a solution for the crack equation of motion G=2γ. From a mathematical point of view, the solution presented is singled out by its ‘Lorentz'-symmetry and should be regarded as a kind of fundamental solution whose knowledge could provide the exact solution of the more realistic problem of a crack initially (t → −∞) at rest and approaching the situation presented here at t → ∞.</subfield>
