   <subfield code="a">Conclusions: DNA is a complex macromolecule whose immunological properties result from structural microheterogeneity. In normal immunity, antibodies to DNA can arise by stimulation by bacterial DNA because of the adjuvant properties of foreign DNA as well as the presence of non-conserved sequences that serve as B cell epitopes. In SLE, anti-DNA antibodies arise by a process of DNA antigen drive and could result from stimulation by either self or foreign DNA. Since foreign DNA is immunogenic, this antigen may have an enhanced ability to drive anti-DNA autoantibody production in the individual with functional abnormalities in the B or T cell compartment. Future research will define further the interaction of foreign DNA with the normal as well aberrant immune system and hopefully lead to strategies to eliminate the production of pathogenic anti-DNA autoantibodies.</subfield>
