   <subfield code="a">Counselling in New Zealand faces a number ofchallenges as it approaches the new millennium, manyparalleling similar dilemmas in other parts of theworld. This article represents one counsellor's viewand explores issues for the profession, andconsequently the New Zealand Association ofCounsellors (NZAC), relating to promoting, monitoring,maintaining and enhancing effective, safe andaccessible counselling services. These areparadoxically both more necessary and more vulnerablein the present 's'sNew Right'' political environment.The profession must address cultural difference,challenge the feminisation of counselling, considerpotential employment saturation, sustain advocacyroles, reconcile third-party funder/client demandsand enhance professional standards. In relation tothese, the NZAC must address its own structure, itsmembers' participation and its criteria for gainingand maintaining membership, as well as advocating forappropriate training and challenging negative publicperceptions about counselling. It must also improveinternal communication strategies and resourcing forlobbying its many and varied stakeholders.</subfield>
