   <subfield code="a">Conte Giordano Riccati (1709-1790), a private scholar of Venice, who apparently was unaware of Euler's studies from the year 1766, investigated especially the axi-symmetrical vibration of a circular membrane in his &quot;Dissertazione fisico-matematica delle vibrazioni del tamburo” [19], which appeared 20 years later. His imaginative way of solution is based upon an other of Euler's studies [5], which would have led him to his aim, as we will show here, had Riccati not deviated from the right way at a certain point. From a practical man's point of view, Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni (1756-1827), the founder of acoustics, rated in [4] Riccati's wrong solution higher than Euler's substantially correct theory. Obviously, Siméon-Denis Poisson (1781-1840) knew neither about Euler's work [6] when he published his &quot;Mémoire sur l'équilibre et le mouvement des corps élastiques” [18] in 1829. During the following decades he was acknowledged in Europe as creator of the theory of membrane vibrations. While the English science maintained narrowmindedly this legend (i.e. in [23]) until the middle of this century, Euler's priority is commonly recognized in Germany and France since the turn of this century.</subfield>
