   <subfield code="a">This review deals with polyketides produced by the filamentous fungusMonascus which include: 1) a group of yellow, orange and red pigments, 2) a group of antihypercholesterolemic agents including mevinolin and related compounds and 3) the newly discovered metabolite ankalactone. Biosynthesis, methods of production, isolation and biological activities of these secondary metabolites are discussed.</subfield>
