An analysis of rock landslides that occurred during construction and operation of hydraulic structures in Russia and abroad indicates that enormous social and economic loss is associated with them. 2. Unstable slopes can be the cause of a change in the location of the site, designs of the structures, and construction technology during construction and operation of hydropower facilities. 3. The active design method makes it possible to substantially reduce the volume of predesign surveys and to eliminate delays in construction works. 4. To prevent emergency situations on hydraulic structures it is necessary to organize monitoring of all landslideprone slopes during construction and operation of the structures. 5. In recent years, in connection with the exceptionally rapid development of rock mechanics, new, very effective methods of studying rock slopes with the use of computer techniques have appeared, which creates great possibilities for prompt and reliable evaluation of the stability of rock masses under complex engineering-geologic conditions.</subfield>
