| 520 | 3 | |a Although Taiwan has embraced democratic values for only three decades, the island is set to become the first place in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage. While this showcases the impressive outcomes of the country's democratisation, it is interesting to explore the main discourses surrounding same-sex marriage that prevail throughout modern Taiwanese society. To do so, the author translated speeches formulated at the Legislative Yuan public hearing on same-sex marriage on the 24th November 2016, and subsequently analysed these discourses with the help of the island's socio-historical background and academic literature established in the first sections. The main themes emerging from the discourses analysis are love, family, marriage, child well-being, adoption, religion, and human rights. Interestingly, the research found that Confucian values still play a significant role in shaping rhetoric regarding family and the institution of marriage, while other themes show the growing influence of western ideologies and rhetoric. | |
