   <subfield code="a">&quot;The purpose of this study is to provide greater perspective on the development of the musical world of Harry Partch by examining his instrument designs and tunings in relation to the development of their musical applications. After several years of experimenting with just intonation, Partch attached a lengthened neck, marked with just tuning intervals, to his viola . For the next three years he composed exclusively for voice and Adapted Viola using just intonation. In addition to composing, Partch documented his theoretical ideas. The viola was a first step in the invention, design, construction of and composition for a large orchestra of instruments over the next four decades. These instruments are not only the result of the creative process of the composer, but were an essential formative element in that process</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">This study focuses on the string and keyboard instruments, which Partch characterizes as the voice and soul of his music. These instruments are readily tuned, and they do not involve as much acoustical and physical complication as tuning the percussion does. Because of their flexible tuning the string and keyboard instruments played a dynamic role in Partch's development of principals of tuning. His close attention to the effects of the tuning on the sound and the playing in turn caused ongoing development of instrument design and playing technique</subfield>
