520 3 |a The introduction of zirconium dioxide into ZnO/MgO-SiO 2 compositions leads to enhanced activity in the conversion of ethanol into 1,3-butadiene due to an increase in the rate of the intermediate step involving the aldol condensation of acetaldehyde. The role of ZrO 2 has been attributed to the formation of additional active sites, namely, Lewis acid sites, including those in the contact zone of the oxide phases.
