520 3 |a A 10-week growth experiment was performed to determine the vitamin C requirement of adult genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT), Oreochromis niloticus. Fish with an initial body weight of 220.06±6.10g were cultured in cages (20 fish per cage) and fed semi-purified diets containing different levels of vitamin C: 10.22 (control diet), 27.81, 48.49, 95.79, 187.66, and 382.54mg vitamin Ckg−1. l-gulonolactone oxidase (GLO) was not detected in kidney or liver of tilapia. The weight gain (WG) of the 48.49, 95.79, 187.66, and 382.54mgkg−1 groups was significantly higher than that of the control group. Feed efficiency and body composition of tilapia were not significantly different among the groups (P>0.05). The vitamin C contents in liver and muscle increased at the beginning and reached a plateau at ≥187.66mgkg−1. Regression analyses revealed that the vitamin C requirement of adult GIFT is 53.05, 180.53, and 185.86mgkg−1 based on WG,hepatic, and muscle vitamin C content, respectively.
