   <subfield code="a">The optimal measurement counting time for gamma-ray spectrometry analysis using HPGe detectors was determined in our laboratory by studying the correlation between the minimum detectable activity and the measurement counting time. For a system using a HPGe P-type (80%) detector, the optimal measurement counting time was determined to be 15h for energy lines higher than 100keV and 20h for energy lines lower than 100keV. For a system using a HPGe N-type (60%) detector, the optimal counting time was determined to be 15h. It was found that knowing the optimal measurement counting times is practical when determining detection limits for long-lived radionuclides, such as to satisfy laboratory accreditation technical requirements relevant for ISO 17025:2005.</subfield>
