Early estimation of project size, software quality (number of defects injected and fixed) and completion time is essential for successful project planning and tracking. In this paper, we suggest a strategy for the optimization of the action plans in the test process by applying the design of experiments to the testing of maturity model assessment procedure, which provides the step-by-step guidelines for improving organizational test processes. We are able to quantify process performance in terms of a defect containment matrix for each process stage. This is accomplished by the application of Taguchi's design of experiments and surface response methods in order to find parametric equations for the cost of quality, which is in turn related to defect removal efficacy.
