Reaction of 2-(2-bromo-2-nitroethenyl)furan derivatives with dimedone and cyclohexane-1,3-dione

520 3 |a 2-Bromo-5-(2-bromo-2-nitroethenyl)furan reacted with cyclohexane-1,3-dione and dimedone on heating in boiling benzene in the presence of triethylamine to give 3-(5-bromofuran-2-yl)-2-nitro-3,5,6,7- tetrahydro-1-benzofuran-4(2H)-ones. Analogous reactions of 5-nitro-2-(2-bromo-2-nitroethenyl)furan led to the formation of 3-(5-nitrofuran-2-yl)-6,7-dihydro-1-benzofuran-4(5H)-ones. The isolated products were character-
