   <subfield code="a">Fifteen experiments with instantaneous opening of apertures of different size from pipes without thermal insulation and nine experiments with instantaneous opening of apertures beneath thermal insulation are analyzed. Analysis shows that in the first case droplet burning of sodium is due to dispersion of sodium, which results in rapid growth of the air pressure in a box up to an inadmissible level. In the second case (with a leak beneath the thermal insulation) the sodium flows out of the insulated volume without being dispersed and burns up on the floor of the box, which does not give rise to pressure growth in the box. This comports with an analysis given here of 60 years of experience with leaks in sodium systems.</subfield>
